Salem -

To the editor:

The city of Salem’s own Bill Woolley has the North Shore TMA flirting with first place among 10 teams, statewide, in the Fire Up Your Foot Power campaign, sponsored by MassCommute and the North Shore TMA.

Bill, assistant director of Salem’s Park, Recreation & Community Services Department for the past two years, has been pedaling to work, rain or shine, summer or winter, for 16 years.

Salem city employees are encouraged to sign up to participate in the Fire Up Your Foot Power commute challenge at www.masscommute.com. This program encourages people to participate in cleaner, cheaper and more environmentally friendly commutes. Walk or bike for part or all of your commute and you are eligible to win a $25 gift card or a GPS device at the end of the promotion.

Employees across eastern Massachusetts, including Salem, Boston, Cambridge, Andover, Danvers, Lexington, Lawrence and Framingham, are logging their weekly commute into a database that will show them their dollar savings on gas, as well as their CO2 emissions. Participants may use their foot power in combination with the train, bus, ferry or carpooling.

There are now nine participants from the North Shore actively commuting to work and logging their weekly commutes. While the team is small, Bill’s consistent participation at 91 percent and his faithful logging practices have kept the North Shore TMA among the top-ranked teams in the challenge, which ends Aug. 31.

Bill is also working with MassCommute to begin a Boston area biker’s blog about biking to work. His first posting was the Top Ten Reasons people give for not biking to work. Check out www.baystatebikecommuters.blogspot.com.

The North Shore TMA would like to thank Bill Woolley for his commitment to clean air and for doing his part to keep one more car off the road Thanks, Bill!
