helps you to stay fit and healthy. Click here to see how much money you can save and carbon you reduce
when you commute by biking or walking. Why not get your work out during your daily commute?

Thinking about biking or walking to work?  Here are some things to consider.

Assess Your Fitness Level

Prior walking to work or hopping on your bike and cycling to work, it’s a good idea to take a walk or spin around your neighborhood – walking or biking for the period of time that you expect it will take you to commute to work. If you don’t feel comfortable at first, why not “train” on the weekends to work up to your commute to work.

How Far from Work Do You Live?

The average walking speed is 3 MPH, while the average biking speed is 10 MPH.  Therefore if you live within these distances to work, an active commute could be right for you!  If you live further than these distances, you may want to commute by walking or biking to/from the train station or bus stop or perhaps drive your car (or carpool!) to an appropriate location and complete your commute using your footpower!

Equipment Needs

For walking all that is required is pair of walking shoes that provide good support.  For biking, its important to have a bike that’s in good working condition, a HELMET is a must, and appropriate closed toe foot-ware.  If you are commuting during dusk or darkness, you should also have reflective materials and a bike light (headlight and tail light).  At the worksite, check to make sure that the facility has an appropriate location to park your bike and make sure to purchase a bike lock to secure your bike once parked.  Check our Cycling Corner for resources to have your bike “tuned-up” and to pick up the equipment you’ll need for a safe commute.

Education

MassBike offers classes in safe bike commuting as well as pamphlets and brochures to help you learn more about the rules of the road for bike commuter.  The North Shore TMA also has resources to help you have a safe and enjoyable commute. Check out our Transportation Information Center for more info.
